American Record Guide Review: WTE and The Road Not Taken

Excerpted from the September/October 2012 issue of American Record Guide

“The big new piece is James Stephenson’s Road Not Taken, commissioned by the WTE and soloist Matthew Guilford. Stephenson says the work was completed before he realized it could have been inspired by the Robert Frost poem, so he gave each movement a title from the text: ‘Two Roads’, ‘Diverged’, and ‘All the Difference’. The 17-minute concerto for bass trombone and trombone choir presents formidable challenges, and Guilford has what it takes to handle it: the ability to play both very low (expected for a bass trombonist) and very high (not expected), a clear and concentrated tone quality, and remarkable technical skills.”
